never think small - redux

Herman, from the Climate Gallery, sent out a ton of photos from the opening. My work is in this one. Unfortunately my new piece didn’t make it into the photo because it was very high up. Though that is a lot better than being at knee-height where some of the other pieces were. I love the pieces below mine! They’re very clever and really pulled the eye away from a lot of the work on this wall. Ah well, it is always best never to take yourself too seriously.

Wandering Aengus

With February and Valentine’s day approaching, I suppose the subject of this piece might be topical. Unrequited love, lust, restlessness, fantasy. I think it fits the theme for the Lust in Lustine show. I haven’t decided if I want to submit it or not. I probably will if I can find a decent frame tomorrow night though some people may be surprised not to see a SIAWOA piece from me (I have one in mind, but it will take a few weeks to execute. I’ll get to it at some point).

Anyway, this is the illustration I was working on last Tuesday when my computer shut off for 2 days. Luckily I didn’t lose much! Here’s the finished piece. It was actually inspired by Furnace Mountain’s musical setting of the poem by W.B. Yeats which you can hear on their MySpace page.

I’m continuing to experiment with my digital cut paper techniques and smart layers in Photoshop. It’s like 15 years ago watching the progress bars progress. Obviously this technique still needs refinement and I probably need a faster processor.

Here is the text of the poem from Bartleby.com

The Song of Wandering Aengus

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

Update: I did submit the piece to Lust as a modified 8″ x 10″ though the original size is 7.5″ x 10.5″.
I also put it up on Deviant Art and it’s now available as a greeting card through GCU, though I can’t guarantee their print quality.

New this year. Digital “cut paper” style cards available on Greeting Card Universe just in time for very last-minute shoppers, or next year. One for Chanukkah and one for Christmas. Indeed, Sherill, I cheated (but you can tell).

This is for Craig whom I didn’t really know and will now never get to know. I think the Valkyries are becoming a series of their own.

the zip code show: hotel california (north kenter ave., los angeles 90049)

I created this piece for the Zip Code Show. It’s a group show and I’m happy to be showing with a bunch of lovely and talented artists, many of whom I met through Artomatic. Details are below. Opening night is next Saturday the 29th. I discovered I don’t really have a good photo of the piece from the front. Unlike the other pieces in the Score series, this one is vertical and the staff lines are not parallel (for those who can read music, it’s bottom to top, and, I believe, in the key of Bflat).

In the early 1990′s, kids drove their cars up to the top of Kenter at night to drink beer, smoke cigarettes, and make out to the music on their car sterios. The view from the top of Kenter is pretty stellar; the lights of the long boulevards sparkle and glitter, stretching miles to the ocean in the distance, and often you could hear the calling of the coyotes. I spent many nights up there with friends in my early 20′s.

A new addition to my continuing series, “The Score is a Work of Art”
Visual interpretations, conveying the spirit of music—inspired by its moods, emotions, genres and instrumentations.
