Life Again

6/7/2011 By in General

Life caught up to me again. In the past few months I finished the artwork for the book I’ve been working on for 10 to 2 Childrens books.

I also finished two more “key pieces” (“Little Cabin on the Hill” from the TSIAWOA project). These are for sale and I will officially post them as soon as I can.

I also did a few site updates in the display of my portfolio and projects sections.

Other than that, no new artwork to report except the creation of our lovely daughter born on April 10th. I have some ideas and things I need to finish, not to mention more site updates with older artwork but that will have to come as it can… in between feedings and diaper changes!

Namaste Christmas Tree Pose

12/10/2010 By Mishka in Cards, Women

Wow where did the rest of the year go!?

Anyway here is the latest card I made for GCU. It’s an idea I had last year. I guess that’s telling. The card will be available on GCU as soon as it gets through the approval process (I’ll update the link here when it’s ready).

Edit: They finally approved the card. Just in time for next year. Oh well, here’s the link.

Never Think Small – Redux, The Climate Gallery, Queens, New York

never think small - redux

Herman, from the Climate Gallery, sent out a ton of photos from the opening. My work is in this one. Unfortunately my new piece didn’t make it into the photo because it was very high up. Though that is a lot better than being at knee-height where some of the other pieces were. I love the pieces below mine! They’re very clever and really pulled the eye away from a lot of the work on this wall. Ah well, it is always best never to take yourself too seriously.

Walking to Caesarea (Eli Eli)

2/28/2010 By in Series, The Score is a Work of Art

eli eli 1

I finished another piece in The Score is a Work of Art series based on the Hebrew song, Walking to Caesarea (Eli Eli). It is a very powerful piece – originally a poem – written by poet/playwrite/warrior Hannah Szenes who did not live to see 23 years old. The music was written by Israeli composer, David Zehavi.

For me, this is a simple song about walking on the beach and wondering why there is so much unrest in humanity.

I’d been trying to figure out how to do execute this for a while and am still unsure whether this is a study or a final. I had thought about working with polymer or resin casting in order to be more literal, so I may do another version of this piece in future trying those techniques.

I found this series of wooden frames that I liked when framing a print of …Wandering Aengus and on an impulse decided to use the frame and it’s glass as part of the art for Eli Eli, though I think the glass is perhaps too smooth and too close to the sand to be representing water. The idea is that the sand (glued in layers to the canvas) is under the water. The hemp strings of the staff are like fishing nets under the water digging lines in the sand. The pebbles here are floating on the water, which I like because it’s fanciful.

All in all, I really like the way this turned out though the photographs don’t really show the depth very well.

Here is the version of this piece that Harris recorded as part his masters thesis – The last one, #8 (we both always liked the song): https://harris.wulfson.com/?p=312

The Song of Wandering Aengus

1/31/2010 By Mishka in General

Wandering Aengus

With February and Valentine’s day approaching, I suppose the subject of this piece might be topical. Unrequited love, lust, restlessness, fantasy. I think it fits the theme for the Lust in Lustine show. I haven’t decided if I want to submit it or not. I probably will if I can find a decent frame tomorrow night though some people may be surprised not to see a SIAWOA piece from me (I have one in mind, but it will take a few weeks to execute. I’ll get to it at some point).

Anyway, this is the illustration I was working on last Tuesday when my computer shut off for 2 days. Luckily I didn’t lose much! Here’s the finished piece. It was actually inspired by Furnace Mountain’s musical setting of the poem by W.B. Yeats which you can hear on their MySpace page.

I’m continuing to experiment with my digital cut paper techniques and smart layers in Photoshop. It’s like 15 years ago watching the progress bars progress. Obviously this technique still needs refinement and I probably need a faster processor.

Here is the text of the poem from Bartleby.com

The Song of Wandering Aengus

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

Update: I did submit the piece to Lust as a modified 8″ x 10″ though the original size is 7.5″ x 10.5″.
